Sung Kang to Showcase His Movie ‘Drifter’ At New York Auto Show
Filmmaker and car enthusiast Sung Kang, known for his role as Han in “The Fast and the Furious” film franchise, is bringing a sneak peek of his upcoming film “DRIFTER” to the New York International Auto Show.
Kang wrote, directed, and starred in the story of a solitary janitor who finds redemption and belonging through the competitive drifting scene. Coming soon to theaters worldwide, the film reflects his belief that cars can bring people together through creativity and purpose.
At the New York International Auto Show, visitors will get an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at “DRIFTER” and see the actual drift cars featured in the film up close. Fans can explore the craftsmanship behind the cars, experience the excitement of drifting culture brought to life on the show floor, and hear about the film before its official release. Kang will hold daily Q&A sessions and meet fans.
“Events like New York International Auto Show represent everything that is important to me about car culture,” Kang said. “It is a place where enthusiasts come together to be part of a community with a shared passion.” I am thankful to everyone for the years of support that helped me make my dreams come true with ‘DRIFTER.'”
Kang’s connection to car culture runs deep. He has several celebrated builds, including the award-winning Fugu Z Datsun 240Z, the Project Underdog Ford Maverick built with high school students, and the Doc Z. He recently celebrated Fugu Z’s 10-year anniversary and the debut of his latest creation, the Veilside 240Z nicknamed 78.
“Sung Kang’s DRIFTER captures something we’ve always believed at the New York Auto Show that cars are more than machines; they’re a powerful form of self-expression and connection,” said Mark Schienberg, President of the New York Auto Show. “Bringing this film and the iconic AE86 ‘Lola,’ to the Show [NYIAS] will give our attendees a unique opportunity to see Sung Kang’s vision firsthand.”
“We at R2XPO believe Sung Kang embodies the values of unity and positive representation that our platform stands for. His participation underscores our shared mission to celebrate car culture in a way that inspires the next generation while reinforcing safety, respect, and community,” said Calvin Chan, co-founder of R2XPO. “His influence has helped elevate car enthusiasm from niche circles into mainstream media, particularly shining a spotlight on JDM culture and its deep roots in craftsmanship, individuality, and heritage.”

About DRIFTER
DRIFTER is an independently produced feature film written, directed by, and starring SUNG KANG. In the sun-bleached, working-class town of Barstow, California, Tree (Kang) lives a solitary existence, haunted by a blind eye and the crushing weight of a generational family debt. By day, he invisibly mops the floors of Willow Springs Raceway. But in the quiet hours of dusk and dawn, he finds his voice behind the wheel of his battered but beloved 1980s Toyota AE86 Corolla, pushing the limits of control in the art of drifting. An unexpected opportunity thrusts him into “Legends of Drift,” a professional competition that offers a one-in-a-million shot at escaping his predetermined life. DRIFTER also features actor/drivers Adam LZ, James Pumphrey, Rutledge Wood, and Dai Yoshihara, alongside award-winning actors Tamara Braun, Gregory Cruz, Michael Nehring, Grant Sullivan, and McCaleb Burnett.
Kang also produced with Brian Yang and their company Raison d’Etre Stories, from a script by Kang, Aaron Strongoni, and producer Ted Chung. Hoonigan co-founder Brian Scotto also produced and served as second unit director. Executive producers include Victor Rodriguez Jr., Tyrone Rodriguez, Toan Nguyen, Eric Collins, Edson Williams, and Ron Gee, and co-producers Elizabeth Geli, editor Lam Nguyen, and Bao-Khanh Tran.
